The Diocletian's Palace
The most iconic historical site in Split is Diocletian’s Palace, built by the Roman emperor Diocletian in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries AD. It is one of the best-preserved Roman architectural marvels in the world. The palace complex was intended as a luxurious retirement residence for Diocletian and featured impressive architectural elements, including columns, arches, and a grand mausoleum. Over time, the palace evolved into a small fortified town, which formed the nucleus of modern-day Split.
The Diocletian’s Palace remains the heart of the city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting millions of visitors each year.
